13 Kane, Joseph
1894-1975El nombre de Joseph Kane se asocia de forma indisoluble a una productora, Republic, de principio a fin. Kane habia dirigido en 1935 un serial para Mascot, que junto con otras pequenas productoras se asociaron para fundar Republic ese mismo ano. Desde esa fecha hasta 1958, en que la productora desaparece, Kane es uno de sus directores mas prolificos. Estamos ante uno de los grandes nombres del western, en cantidad, ya que no en calidad. 1907-2000Este magnifico realizador, nacido en Nueva York, empieza en el departamento de montaje de la Mas cot en 1935, de donde pasa a la Universal siempre en el mismo cometido, para terminar dirigiendo su primer largometraje dos anos despues. Ya en la primera etapa de su carrera como director muestra cualidades importantes como creador de universos visuales, logrando algun magnifico filme como The Invisible Ghost (1940), convencional muestra de ci ne de terror con Bela Lugosi como protagonista, que el talento de Lewis transforma en un filme me morable por muchos conceptos. Boss of Hang town Mesa, por su parte, es mucho mas que una pelicula de serie, rodada a la mayor gloria de Johnny Mack Brown. Aunque en esta primera etapa abundan tambien las obras poco distinguidas, el segundo periodo de la trayectoria profesional de Lewis, que podemos situar cronologicamente entre 1945 y 1958, abunda en obras maestras o que se acercan a esa calificacion. Empezamos con la magnifica My Name Is Julia Ross, para seguir con las esplendidas Relato criminal (The Undercover Man, 1949), El demonio de las armas (Gun Crazy, 1950) y Agente especial (The Big Combo, 1955), por citar solo algunas, ejemplos se neros de cine negro. Los westerns de esta segunda etapa son, todos ellos, de primer nivel, especialmente A Lawless Street y Terror in a Texas Town, filme modelico con el que Lewis cierra una estimulante filmografia. 1902-1981Sus primeros anos los ocupa en labores de actor de vodevil. Aprende el oficio de realizador de James Cruze, que le da la alternativa en 1934, con Amor en ruta, modesta pelicula de serie basada en una obra de Zane Grey. Su labor como director, con casi noventa peliculas en su haber, entre cine y television, fue anodina, destacando eso si por su eficacia como gestor, lo que hizo que le fueran encomendados muchos proyectos en los que no se deseaba gastar demasiado dinero. Lo mejor de si mismo lo dio en la comedia, genero al que se dedico preferentemente a partir de los anos 40. Trabajo con alguna asiduidad para la pareja Bud Abbott-Lou Costello, manteniendo una importante relacion personal con el segundo de ellos. Su ultimo western estrenado, Zorro, the Avenger (1960), es una sintesis de 6 episodios de la serie televisiva que, con el mismo titulo, produjo Walt Disney. 1898-1962Hermano menor de Henry King y, a la larga, mucho menos relevante que el, nacio tambien en Chris tianburg. Empieza a dirigir en 1921. A comienzos del sonoro se ocupa de las versiones espanolas de peliculas de la Fox, con un tal Luis Alonso, que despues seria famoso con el nombre de Gilbert Roland. De los 38 westerns que se le acreditan, 21 son mudos. Influencias familiares le procuraron trabajo en Universal como montador en 1931, aunque su primera acreditacion como tal es de 1937. Trabaja en Universal hasta 1948; entonces se pasa a la direccion, alternando cine de serie B y television. Es, basicamente, un director de genero, profesional correcto pero no especialmente distinguido. 20 Warren, Charles Marquis
1912-1990Graduado en el Baltimore City College, periodista en el “The Saturday Evening Post”, escribio novelas de genero, en particular westerns, algunas de las cuales adapto el mismo al cine. Guionista y director de cine, Warren fue agente literario de F. Scott Fitzgerald en los ultimos anos del escritor. Empieza a dirigir en 1951, en especial westerns. El primero de ellos, tambien su primera pelicula, es Little Big Horn. En television, tiene el honor de formar parte del equipo creador de la mitica serie Rawhide, con Clint Eastwood. La mayor parte de sus westerns no carece de interes pero, ademas, en su condicion de novelista, autor de relatos breves, o guionista, esta asociado a un buen punado de magnificas obras del genero. Valga un ejemplo: Only the Valiant, la estupenda pelicula de Gordon Douglas.
